(He was not born to be a girl,
He was born to be himself)
I.)
And when he was five he
was forced into dresses,
not understanding why
he couldn't wear the
trousers to school and
not the skirt,
he learned that clothes
and toys had one gender only
and so did he.
II.)
And when he was seven he
told his Mother he was a
boy and didn't understand
her insistence that he was
a she; even though he
knew he was a Prince
not a Princess.
III.)
And when he was eleven he
wore a tie to high school instead
of the skirt and he learned
that no matter what the experts
say, children can still be cruel.
(but guess what, he still wore it
day after day 'cause he wanted to
and it was all him)
IV.)
And when he was 12 his body betrayed
him and he looked in the mirror and
hated who he saw so he hid the dresses
when his Mother was out and learned
that gender is in your head and not
between your legs and that gave him
hope
V.)
And when he was 14, he told them
his real name,
but even though they said they'd
always love him
for who he was,
they turned their backs on him
because he didn't turn out the way they expected
He didn't turn out the way they expected
VI)
And when he was 15, he turned up to
prom and the bullies called him a lesbian,
so he told them who he was even
though he knew they'd beat him up
like they did everyday for the tie
but he didn't know they would use
knives that time.
VII.)
And he didn't live to be 16,
and his Mother buried him, but
maybe she understood in the end
and maybe she didn't,
but she still buried him
in the tie and the words
on the gravestone were
"beloved son."
(because he was not born to be a girl,
he was born to be himself)

To Be A Girl, To Be A Boy, To Be A Human
You must like fashion, to be a girl,
You must like pink and purple, to be a girl,
You must like shopping, to be a girl,
You must talk in a high-pitched voice, to be a girl,
You cannot do manly things, to be a girl,
You are not capable of doing a man's work, because you are a girl.
That is not true,
Anyone can be a girl.
You must like trucks and cars, to be a boy,
You must like sports, to be a boy,
You must be athletic, to be a boy,
You must lack common sense, to be a boy,
You must follow your father's footsteps, to be a boy,
You cannot show signs of weakness, to be a boy,
You cannot act or be like a girl, because you are a boy.
That is not

Are you a boy or a girl?
Mama stood frozen, staring down at the cherubic little redhead, his words still ringing in her ears. "Are you a boy or a girl?" The other redhead, the little one's brother, blushed and hastily touched the boy's shoulder. "Ao-chan, that was mean." Finally shaking off the shock of the child's keen perception, Mama gave a shaky laugh. "It's quite alright, Hayes-sama. May I answer him?" She smiled at the confused expression Ace shot her before he nodded and let go of his brother.
She knelt and took the little boy's hands in hers, running her thumbs in gentle circles over the backs of his hands. "I know it's a little confusing, since I have a boy

We're Not Bad Kids
Drowning in cigarette smoke, sighing away the seconds,
siphoning out the life in our limp limbs, heads
lolling to the sky, asking for the stars we can barely
see to give one last wish,
our skin pale like dead fish
bellies. I can see the sickness spreading
through our broken hearts,
our broken starts as we try, again and again,
to be free. Who wants to live when
conformity dictates that death is the only truth we can find?
We call each other "bros" but we're really a suicide pact;
we try to act
like there's something funny about being out here in the woods,
in the man-made clearing of cement,
not looking for pleasure but searching for t

Very nice. Touching and well written. Just a "housekeeping" note: in VI) it says "When he was 16..." and then in VII) "And he didn't live to be 16."
